Ron Rivera is interviewing for the Eagles’ defensive coordinator opening…which came up Tuesday as the Junkies were discussing Sylvester Stallone’s multiple career reinventions?
“Maybe he can write a role for Ron Rivera who's trying to have his, what, third act in the NFL?” Cakes said.
EB, Bish, and JP were all ‘stunned,’ but Flaim did give Ron props for wanting to go right back to work.
“If you look at his defensive coordinator resume, like we've been talking about Eric Bieniemy's resume – it’s been years, but the last time he was a defensive coordinator, he had the number one defense in the league!” JP said.
“But again, that was 2010,” Cakes shot back. “A lot of things have changed in the league since 2010.”
JP understands, but there is the ability to say he became an administrator or CEO-type coach, so he can get back to that kind of resume – and maybe we want him in Philly?
“If you're a Commanders fan, you want him to land in Philadelphia, especially if the defense looked anything like this Commanders defense looked, especially down the stretch of the season,” Cakes said.
That led into a discussion of how all the teams left this weekend had defenses with stout linebackers – including San Francisco, with two players Adam Peters helped drat in the middle rounds – and secondary depth, which is something the Commanders definitely did not have, and the Eagles didn’t seem to, either.
“If you're Ron, you're going to have limited options coming off the disaster here in Washington,” Cakes said, “but if I'm him, I'm gonna look at that Eagles defense and be like, maybe I could find a better spot. They do have talent, but that team was getting lit on fire defensively, especially in the secondary.”
“I could punch up the numbers, but 2022 versus 2023 they like, dropped in sacks like 30 sacks and it was mostly the same guys, except they drafted Jalen Carter,” JP said.
And the dagger from Bish:
“I would just be shocked if Rivera was the guy that they chose. He's on the interview circuit, but it doesn't mean he's the favorite.”
