As we enter Week 2 of Commanders camp, Sam Fortier of the Washington Post checks in with The Junkies to discuss Dyami Brown and Logan Thomas' roles, how Sam Howell was looking, and anything and everything else from the on-field product in Week 1.
But the big thing, to him, was the return of fans en masse to training camp, much bigger than the "one or two people in lawn chairs" that has been the norm in recent years.
"To go to what it was on Saturday where the team reported 10,000 fans and the eye test checked that out, and players getting legit ovations – I was really impressed," Fortier said. "I thought the vibe was really good, and I think the fan base seems to be coming back around. Week 1 is going to be bumping at FedEx."
And, for a change, the focus was actually with what they saw on the field.
"The most different thing was that Josh Harris wasn't there and there were no chants – people were really into the football," Fortier said. "There was one spot where Sam Howell misfired deep and one of the fans called him trash; while I think that's reading too much into one practice, the fact that the fans are focused on the football and having a crowd of that magnitude was, honestly, kind of normal."
One of those fans was DC native Kevin Durant, who was there…despite the fact that Fortier posted a "photo" of KD in the VIP tent that looked more like a hologram thanks to the sun!
"This is crazy propaganda for the boys on the Beltway Football podcast!" Fortier laughed. "I do not want to defend the photo at all, because I realized it was a terrible picture when I got back to the media tent."
Take a listen to Fortier's entire call-in, with the training camp breakdowns, above!
