Kevin Sheehan: Is Chase Young due for a bounce-back season?

"This is one of my real big hopes for the upcoming season," Kevin Sheehan said Wednesday. "I want Chase Young to be everything he can be, I don't want talent held hostage, as Doc Walker likes to say. I want to be right about really pushing for him in 2020 to be drafted. He's still a young man with extraordinary talent, I hope he puts it all together. Everything together. The thing about it too, is that if he's able to do that it will take this defense to a completely different level than where it was last year... and where it can really be this year."

Sheehan calls the former No. 2 overall pick the X-factor for the Washington Commanders' defense in the 2023 season, but it is still a big question mark. Young had just five tackles and no sacks in three games last year after tearing his ACL midway through his second season, a season in which he had just 26 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in nine games.

So, would you bet that Young has a true bounce-back year with "10-plus sacks and two to three game-changing plays? The kind of plays that leads to wins or certainly the chance to win games. Two to three, sack, forced fumble, pick it up and run with it, big interception, a strip of a running back, knocking out of a quarterback, these are the type of plays I'm talking about."

Producer Denton Day said he would bet on it – not heavily, but something. Sheehan had some concerns about betting on it: "I want it to happen, I hope it happens. What gives me pause is they considered trading him in the offseason. Now, they've been wrong about things, clearly quarterback being one of them, and they could be wrong about him, but I think that they – and maybe it's changing, I hope it is – haven't seen him as the culture fit."

But in the end, Sheehan said he would bet yes. Listen to the full segment and hear from Commanders fans on the audio player above starting at the 26:30 minute mark.
