"You guys are delusional about Justin Fields," a listener to the Kevin Sheehan Show wrote. "I'm a Bears fan living in D.C. and, yes, it's great that he's a nice young man and he has been a class person in a bad organization, but he can't read defenses it's his biggest problem. Defensive coordinators have stumped him since his rookie year and he hasn't improved... it's been the same thing over and over with Fields: half the time he runs, he should have thrown it to a wide-open receiver. He's a bigger and more athletic version of Sam Howell.
"Look at his sack numbers, 135 in three seasons. And he hasn't come close to playing an entire season which is another major red flag. He gets injured. The Bears have been without a quarterback longer than your team has Kevin, can't wait to see if Caleb Williams ends our drought."
That note opens up an interesting point, even with all of Fields' flaws, Sheehan has seen him play some very good games.
Another listener wrote on Twitter with this counter: "Are you convinced that Fields is better than Sam Howell? I'm not."
Sheehan doesn't need convincing: "It's just an opinion, but to me, Justin Fields is better than Sam Howell. I'd rather have Justin Fields trotting onto the field for the opener in early September than Sam Howell. That's just me. Justin Fields is a much better playmaker than Sam Howell. If you're talking about a player's ceiling and floor, the floor with Fields is higher than Sam's. He just makes more plays with his legs off-schedule and his arm than Sam does. His mobility bails him out a ton.... but Justin Fields is a high-level, elite mobility quarterback in the NFL."
