Commanders head coach Ron Rivera was asked about what he's most proud of from his four seasons in Washington: "What we've done with the culture. I think that was one of the things that somebody asked me the same question, I said, the biggest thing more so than anything else I think is I kind of like where we are. Obviously, it's not where we want to be. But that's just the nature of this game sometimes."
As we near the end of Rivera's tenure, Kevin Sheehan said first and foremost the product on the field just wasn't anywhere near good enough. There were periods when his football team was competitive for stretches, and made the playoffs in the Covid season of 2020 and won the NFC East, but "they were never at any point a football team that looked like it was on the verge of turning the corner and becoming a consistently competitive or playoff competitive franchise."
Sheehan added that Rivera is by all accounts a stand-up guy and a very good person, but "the culture and the team that he's leaving for the next regime is actually in total shambles and it requires almost a complete rebuild and that's not what they anticipated when he got here."
He then shifts games to recap the Commanders' 27-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, calling it surprisingly competitive in the first half and one of Eric Bieniemy's better days as a play-caller with some responsible possessions in the opening two quarters for Sam Howell starting. Also, some praise for Sam Cosmi.
