Longtime NFL great and Washington DC native Shawne Merriman joined BMitch and Finlay on Thursday to talk about the NFL offseason, and the big headline in the local area of the looming Commanders sale.

Asked about the inevitable ownership change, Merriman says it was a long time coming for Dan Snyder to sell the team, but it should have been done years ago.

“That started with the name change,” Merriman said. “When the name change started to come up, and the allegations and everything else, the writing was on the wall.

“I think it’s probably a couple years too late. When I say too late, I don’t mean it’s too late to happen, but I think it could have been done two years ago and figure this thing out.”

A new owner coming in two or three years ago likely would have had the Commanders in a better place than they are now, still under Dan Snyder, but Snyder’s time is clearly expiring, and while there are multiple groups placing their bids to become the new owners, Merriman offers a reminder that while the money matters, the obstacle that any group really needs to clear is getting approved by the other 31 owners.

“There’s a process with the other owners to get approved,” Merriman noted. “It doesn’t matter if a team or group comes in and makes an offer. It still has to get approved.”
