In Los Angeles, the pupil has now become the teacher as former Washington head coach Jay Gruden has been hired to work for his former charge, Rams head coach Sean McVay.
McVay, fresh off winning the Super Bowl, told reporters Thursday that his former boss will serve as a consultant during the 2022 NFL Season.
"You guys know how close Jay has been to me," McVay told the media. "He's been such an instrumental part of my coaching career. Huge mentor. So he's going to help us out in a consulting role.
"He's a guy that I heavily rely on and have always, whether he is rocking the Rams blue or not."
While Gruden has been working with the team in Cincinnati this week ahead of the team's preseason finale, reports indicate Gruden will largely work remotely.
McVay and Gruden worked together in Washington starting in 2014 before the offensive wiz kid was hired as Rams head coach in Jan. 2017. Gruden's time in Washington came to an abrupt end after five games in 2019. Gruden last worked in the NFL as the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars during a 1-15 season in 2020.
Of course, the news was met with a few jokes.
