Commanders defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis will need season-ending knee surgery for a torn meniscus, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
The rookie was removed from Washington's season-opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and did not return. MRI results on Monday did not reveal good news for Mathis, who is expected to make a full recovery in 2023, per Rapoport.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Monday that he expected to sign at least one defensive tackle, possibly someone they could add to the 53-man active roster and another who could be added to the practice squad.
Star defensive tackle Jonathan Allen also suffered an injury (groin) and underwent an MRI of his own but his injury isn't expected to be serious.
Mathis was Washington's second-round pick (47th overall) out of Alabama in the 2022 NFL Draft.
