Ron Rivera names Jacoby Brissett Commanders' starting QB

It's official: Jacoby Brissett will start at quarterback for the Commanders on Sunday.

"We're going to go forward and have Jacoby as our starter," Ron Rivera said Wednesday morning. "I think it's probably a good opportunity for Sam to take a break. This is about Sam's continued development, and things haven't gone as well as we'd have liked the last couple weeks, so we just think this is a good opportunity for him to watch."

Howell has been benched in each of the last two games, in which he was going 11-for-26 for 102 yards with one TD and one INT in three-plus quarters against the Rams, and then 6-for-22 for 56 yards and 2 INT, a 1.7 QBR, in one half against the Jets.

Brissett, meanwhile, led touchdown drives on both of his full series against Los Angeles, and then three of his four series against the Jets. In those two games, which is less than a full game's worth of action, he is 18-for-23 for 224 yards and three passing touchdowns.

"This is part of the growth; this is not an indictment on Sam," Rivera said. "Jacoby, bing the professional he is and playing the way he has, is going to give Sam an opportunity to see some things with the offense."

Rivera also said he spoke to ownership and they agreed to the move.

Reaction from our hosts, however, is mixed; 106.7 The Fan has the Military Bowl and then Capitals hockey starting at noon today, so stay tuned to 980 The Team all day for instant reaction, and both channels all day tomorrow!
