The Washington Commanders traded Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks for a pick swap. So, was it a good deal, Kevin Sheehan asks ESPN's Bill Barnwell. "It's this really weird thing," Barnwell explained on trying to determine the value of the picks that Washington got against the one they gave up, who sees this getting about the equivelant of a fifth-round pick for Howell.
After discussing that trade's value, Sheehan asked Barnwell what he makes of the first week of free agency from a Commanders perspective and the... seventeen contracts they've handed out so far.
"I generally like what they've done," Barnwell told Sheehan. "It reminds me a little bit of Houston when they were starting their rebuild post-Deshaun Watson (or when Desahun Watson was done playing but hadn't been traded yet) under Nick Caserio."
The Commanders didn't just look to get younger (like the Cleveland Browns did in their rebuild), Barnwell goes on to say, but they looked to bring in some veteran players (none of whom they have committed to the long-term) who can hopefully build some infastructure around the building.
"And if we nail this quarterback pick, we might be good a lot faster than people are expecting," he said. "I think theres some really talented players coming in."
And the conversation from there hinges on a big question mark and the most important aspect of the offseason: Washington has to nail the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
