Former Commanders QB Colt McCoy was on the Underdog Fantasy podcast recently, and in a discussion on clap cadence, Colt ended up giving Kliff Kingsbury, who was his head coach in 2021 and 2022 in Arizona, some high praise.

“I've got unique perspective with the clap cadence because I used it in the NFL with Kliff, and I was very unsure about it when I got to Arizona. One of the things I loved about Kliff was, ‘hey, I've been in college, everyone in college uses the clap and I don't understand why we can't use it in the NFL.’ So we did, and it worked great. We went to Seattle and won a divisional game, and I used the clap the entire time. I don't know that the offensive linemen loved it, especially tackles, but it worked.”

“Point being, he loved Kingsbury's adaptability, and said that he never let sort of traditional NFL narratives keep him from doing the things that he had success with in college football,” Sheehan continued. “And keep in mind, Colt McCoy had his best season as a starter under Kingsbury. In 2021, they went to San Francisco as a six-point underdog and they beat the 49ers 31-17, and McCoy was 22 of 26 for 249 yards and a touchdown.”

Sheehan gave some other examples of great McCoy games in Arizona, and had ‘a feeling that Colt McCoy would tell you that his best games in the NFL as a starter were the games that he played with Kliff Kingsbury.”

“There are a lot of people that are very impressed and have always been impressed with Colt McCoy's overall sort of NFL savvy and intelligence,” Sheehan said. “There were some physical limitations a bit, but really, he just never stayed healthy…but what could’ve been.”
