Kevin Sheehan: Commanders forcing critical mistakes key to beating evenly matched Falcons

The Commanders' 24-16 win over the Falcons on Sunday "is just one of those games that's really easy to sum up, to analyze," Kevin Sheehan said to start his show on Monday morning. "Atlanta turned the ball over three times – twice in Washington territory – Washington didn't turn it over at all. That's basically it in a nutshell."

"When you're one of those teams in the middle, like Washington and Atlanta clearly are, turnover margin means even more," Sheehan continued. "Those two teams [Sunday] were close in almost everything: talent, coaching, depth. The Falcons made the critical mistakes, Washington didn't and they won the game.

"At 3-3, record-wise, they're right in the mix in the NFC if you're paying attention to this stuff through six weeks. If you care at this point... and yes six games in is too early to be talking playoff scenarios, but through six weeks, Washington is currently tied for seventh and the final playoff place. Yeah, they're right there. If they put up a playoff picture tonight... Washington would be tied for that last spot."

Sheehan brings all this up because the 3-3 start is the best since Ron Rivera came to Washington. The three wins over Arizona, Denver and Atlanta against not-great teams, but if Rivera continues the trend of getting his team to play its best football later on in the year than the three wins early in the year "might pay off," Sheehan said of the .500 record being the franchise's best start in five years.

Before getting into much more Sheehan talked about the game and why it is still too early to have reached a conclusion about quarterback Sam Howell. To hear why and much more, listen on the audio player above.
