Kevin Sheehan talks the potential for Jayden Daniels to jump Caleb Williams in NFL Draft

In his new mock draft at ESPN, Field Yates has two Heisman Trophy winners going with back-to-back picks to start Round 1. Yates has the Chicago Bears selecting USC quarterback Caleb Williams and the Washington Commanders at No. 2 taking LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Of course, that is what Yates is saying today. Kevin Sheehan points out that there is still "a long way to go" until the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft begins on April 25. In fact, we have 71 days for more predictions, prognostications, debates, and for new information to be uncovered that could completely shake up the landscape of the first round.

"I believe that when all of the interviewing, all of the background checking, all of the due [diligence] is over," Sheehan continued, "I think there's a chance Jayden Daniels goes No. 1.

"And that Washington could get Caleb Williams by staying right where they are. That a trade-up might be for Daniels. Or the selection by Chicago might be for Daniels."

He added: "Why do I think that? Well because it just starts with the fact that at this point back in 2010, Cam Newton was not supposed to be the No. 1 overall pick. There was a lot of debate on Cam Newton. And remember with everything that happened from his JuCo move to Auburn, there was a lot of question marks. We've seen this before. We've seen the guaranteed No. 1 lock, especially when there are a couple of players floating around that people really like that maybe you could envision one or two teams falling in love with. I don't think it's over from that standpoint just because history tells you it's not over on who is No. 1 overall."

Sheehan goes on to say that he thinks "there's a difference between Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels" and that the former "is a more polished, at this point, pocket passer" and "is a more polished passer in general." But he thinks that "people will project Jayden Daniels to be that and I also think they will project Jayden Daniels to be much more than a one-trick pony with respect to offenses. I think Jayden Daniels could fit in a lot of offenses."
