Kevin Sheehan opens his show on Wednesday by reading an email from a listener named Eirc: "I've been a fan of our Washington football team for my 48 years on Earth, I remember the Super Bowl wins, the Cowboys rivalry (I miss that so much)... don't get me wrong, I'm as optimistic as I've been in years with [Dan Snyder] gone, but I think you've missed the point on Josh Harris needing to do more in his first year.
"This season needed to feel better than it has. It started well, but even without Congressional investigations in the conversation, this season has been one of the worst I can remember. There was the chance to take the momentum of Dan leaving and truly jump-start the franchise, but the defense needed changes earlier in the season and it seems obvious now that Rivera knew [Jacoby Brissett] gave the team a better chance to win. He shoulda played him much earlier. Who the hell in the NFL throws away a full season to develop a fifth-round quarterback? The answer is nobody does.
"You said the same thing before the season started so you know how ridiculous this whole thing was. I like [Sam Howell], he has talent and moxy and maybe he has the chance to be a starting quarterback down the line, but Ron wasted the years of some good players by committing to Sam for as long as he did with the record the team had. I dunno if Brissett woulda gotten this team to the playoffs, but they wouldn't have been 4-10.
"Josh Harris has had a chance to step in and stop the 'develop the fifth-round pick madness' and he didn't. And the season went as bad as any has in years...."
Sheehan calls this an interesting question to ponder because he was adamant at the beginning of the year that "the people saying just give Sam Howell 17 games are insane. What if he sucks? What if he's just terrible? That's a possibility going into the season."
But, Sheehan disagrees with Eric's email on the point that the Commanders' new owner should have stepped in this season. The argument is that there was no time for Harris to really do much before this season started because the purchase process took so long to complete. And that any attempt for substantive changes to the organization was not possible and this was always going to be a transitional year for the franchise.
Sheehan's full thoughts on the email and what Harris should have done as the season "went much worse than even I thouhgt it could" can be heard on the audio player above!
