The Junkies discuss the Commanders hiring Adam Peters as GM

Adam Peters will be introduced officially as Commanders GM on Tuesday afternoon, bringing a resume as an assistant GM in San Fran and scout in Denver and New England that includes three Super Bowl wins, three more appearances, and a slew of NFL All-Pros and Pro Bowlers.

And yet, at least one Junkie wonders if we're going down a dangerous road?

"His resume is great, the only thing that would get me nervous is, are they going to go down the road of hiring your boys?" JP asked.
"That's what Ron Rivera did by bringing in all his Carolina guys. Bob Myers is part of this search committee, and right off the bat, they were like, well, he's got a connection with Adam Peters."

"I think it's pretty obvious they brought in Myers to get Peters," EB replied. "That's the single reason why they brought him. I mean, he's got the championship pedigree, but, yeah."

A lot of candidates had good resumes, and JP does like the hire, but is it the start of more nepotism?

"My only thing I would worry about is, is, are they just gonna hire their guys? That's usually how it works," JP reiterated.

"I don't know what the relationship is, but if you believe what we hear, the fix is in – Peters was their number one target, so I think they put the advisory board together that would attract him," EB said. "And I think Ben Johnson is their number one target, and they're probably gonna get him in years past Peters about that."

"In years past, Peters wouldn't have even taken the interview here; he would have laughed at the interview in Washington three or four years ago, he wouldn't have touched it, but now, with the new ownership group, he takes it," Cakes replied. "You're just importing winners into the culture here. This guy's won, Myers has the championship pedigree…I love it."

Peters has worked with names like Belichick, Elway, and Lynch, and had a lot to do with player evaluation in San Francisco, so if he was the No. 1 target…it's justified.

"If you look at what they've done, you know, getting George Kittle in the fifth round, getting Lenoir in the fifth round…they've got a lot of starters drafted late," Bish said. "Dre Greenlaw, Fred Warner, those guys were mid-to-late round picks. Aiyuk hit, trading for McCaffrey and going out and getting Trent Williams hit, Purdy – Trey Lance is a miss, but there's been a lot of plusses."

"Nobody drafts perfectly on up and down the board every single year," Cakes said. "You have high-profile misses and that's one of them, but you can't come in into this thing with a perfect record draft."

All that said, Peters' tenure may come down to his first big move: if they draft the right quarterback at No. 2 or not.

"Let's hope the RG3 and Young history doesn't repeat, but it just looks like a professional outfit now," Cakes said. "It's not a coach-centric approach, letting Ron juggle too much coaching and personnel-wise, or the owner making picks from his yacht in the Mediterranean, It looks like a real company."
