Welcome to the NFL, Sam Howell!
On a day where Howell made his first NFL start and became one of a handful of QBs to help the league set a new record for starting quarterbacks in a season, Howell quickly made the most of his chance, firing his first career pass attempt for a 16-yard touchdown to Terry McLaurin:
The Commanders had taken over at the Cowboys’ 20 after a botched punt, and after Howell handed off to Jonathan Williams for a four-yard gain, he dropped back and completed his first NFL attempt for six.
Howell was the Commanders’ fifth-round pick out of North Carolina, but did not see any action this season behind Taylor Heinicke and Carson Wentz, who both sat for the finale with Washington out of playoff contention.
He also became the 67th different QB to start in the NFL this season, setting an NFL record that will only be extended if Green Bay or Detroit make a surprise move Sunday night. The league entered Sunday with a record-tying 64, but Nathan Peterman (Bears) and Anthony Brown (Ravens) started during the early window to set a new record that Howell extended.
