Lynnell Willingham's Commanders Overreaction: Sam Howell holding back Commanders offense

Each week, Lynnell Willingham joins The Hoffman Show to give his Commanders Overreaction. And this week the overaction was a doozy. "Through six weeks. I'm gaining more and more confidence about who Sam Howell could eventually end up becoming as a starting quarterback in the National Football League," he told Craig Hoffman. "But at this point in time, six weeks into the season, I feel like Sam Howell is holding this Commanders offense back."

"The amount of sacks that he's taken is directly influenced the third down numbers, which are amongst the worst in the National Football League right now," Willingham said.

And the impact of Howell's 34 sacks through six games (5.67 per game) and 215 yards lost (35.83 per game) mean that in net yards gained per pass attempt, the Commanders' second-year man ranks 29th out of 33 NFL QBs (minimum 84 attempts) with 5.18 yards.

Howell has been sacked on 13.7 percent of dropbacks (2nd most in the league) and has been pressured on 25.6 percent of his dropbacks (7th most in the league).

"And I think just overall, some of the plays he's not hitting on," Willingham continued. "And I can understand you can nitpick... but when you talk about Washington's offense and where they are right now, they're about middle of the pack in terms of scoring, 20th in yards, points there somewhere around 18..."

Hoffman thought the main point about Howell holding back the offense wrong, but the supporting facts from Willingham were right. Listen on the audio player above for the full take and for more of Willingham's Commanders' Overreactions!
