Trae Young’s exit from the Wizards did not last long.
Per multiple reports, Young, whose opt-out of his previous deal became official Monday morning, has agreed to stay in Washington on a four-year, $212.9 million contract, with a player option for Year 4.
The new deal represents both a longer-term deal and a nice raise for Young, who decided to opt out of the final year of his previous deal last week, foregoing just under $49 million to do so. Per Jodh Robbins of The Athletic, his first-year salary will be $49.5 million, a slight raise over his opted-out salary, and the player option would be worth $56.9 million in Year 4.
Young was eligible for a larger max deal of five years in Washington as they have his Bird rights, but instead receives almost exactly the maximum he could have signed with another team for.
The deal cannot become official until July 6, but seems to lock in at least three more prime years of Young, who played five games last year after being acquired from Atlanta in January.
The Wizards will hope Young can lead their young core, while also getting back to the form that has made him one of just 16 players in NBA history to average at least 20 points and 10 assists per game in the same season (doing it three straight seasons from 2022-25) and post career averages of 25.1 points and 9.8 dimes per game.
