Scott has another huge hit on his hands with “What He’ll Never Have,” which makes a somewhat morbid concept romantic. Dylan explains that the song was not born from personal experience but from a desire to write something different, and it was his wife, Blair, that convinced him of its romantic appeal.
“It really just started with, I was playing the guitar and I was like, ‘man, this feels kind of good.’ And then the thought came to my head of like, ‘you know, what's something different that I haven't written about?’ And it was basically, if I die, which is so morbid, right off the bat, if I die, some other man can have all my stuff, but he will never love you the way that I'm going to love you, kind of deal.”
“And so, I remember writing this song, honestly, didn't finish the song going, ‘oh, this is going to be awesome.’ It was kind of just another day, another song to me,” explains Dylan. “Then my wife heard it and goes, ‘this is my favorite song you've ever written.’ And I'm like, ‘well, this is the biggest insult I've ever got.’”
“She had to explain that to me because all I got out of it was, oh, ‘I love this song, you're dying.’ You know what I'm saying? She's like, ‘what woman doesn't want to hear that? Like, if you were to die, they can have all the stuff, but they'll never love me like you loved me.’ It's just like, ‘I get where you're coming from with this,’ but the math ain't mathing. But it was, she was right. She usually is.”
