Voters around South Carolina head to the polls Tuesday to determine several hotly contested races that could shape the state's future. The most keenly watched and potentially the closest race on the statewide ballot is the U.S. Senate race.
Darline Graham the sister of late Senator Lindsey Graham won the Republican nod after an endorsement from President Trump. She faces off with Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews. Others on the Senate ballot include Libertarian Candidate Kasie Whitener and Mark Hackett the Constitution Party Candidate.
In the Congressional races, several seats are on the ballot across the state. Three major races in the Upstate and one in the Midlands, are the focal points for most of the state. Sheri Biggs the incumbent looks for re-election in District 3. She will face off with Democrat Eunice Lehmacher and Libertarian Brian Corriea.
In District 4, William Timmons is looking for another term. He'll take on Democrat Courtney McClain and Libertarian Jessica Ethridge.
District 5, Ralph Norman is not seeking re-election. So there will be new blood in that spot. Norman has endorsed Republican nominee Wes Climer, he will meet Democrat Mallory Dittmer.
In the Midlands, District 6 is on the ballot. Longtime incumbent and Democrat Jim Clyburn will look to keep his grip on the seat. He will meet Republican John Peterson.
Also on the ballot, Greenville County voters will be asked to approve a 1% sales tax to be used toward roads, transportation and infrastructure. The countywide sales tax-collections would be capped at $1.1 Billion dollars.
Additionally, some Greenville County voters will also see on the ballot, a municipal sales tax question. Under a new state law, municipalities in Greenville, Oconee and Beaufort counties can secure their own 1% sales tax.
The law S.866 was written to ensure only specific projects can be funded, things like roads, highways, bridges, public parking lots, local government services, administration buildings, and other projects.
If approved, a 1% increase would be applied to most taxable purchases made within the city limits. Cities requesting voters to approve the 1% sales tax include Greenville, Mauldin, Simpsonville, Seneca, Travelers Rest, Westminster and West Union. The county and municipal penny-tax questions are not interchangeable.
