Leaders in one Upstate county are taking another step to eliminate the use of controversial Flock Cameras. The Oconee County Council voted Tuesday to approve a second reading of an ordinance that would keep the mass surveillance technology out of the county.
The ordinance would keep the county from using tax dollars, property or equipment to support mass surveillance systems. Council Chairman Matt Durham has been outspoken against Flock Cameras, as he feels they violate the constitution. The ordinance would also make municipalities in the county ineligible to receive certain funding from the county.
Flock Cameras have been used in the county for about 4 years now. Sheriff Mike Crenshaw supports the use of those systems. Durham says that while the cameras make solving crime easier, he feels they are government overreach.
The ordinance passed by a 4-1 vote. The 3rd and final reading for the ordinance is set for September 15th. If approved, the ordinance would be adopted as law in Oconee County.
