A proposed one percent sales tax got mixed results as it was on the ballot in all 5 municipalities in Oconee County. Voters in Seneca and Salem approved of the 1 percent increase. Walhalla, Westminster and West Union all voted against it.
The proposed increase is part of the State's Municipal Tax Relief Act which allows towns without an existing local sales tax to vote on implementing one. The law also mandates that at least 20% of the revenue generated is used toward property tax relief for eligible homeowners.
The remainder of what is generated goes toward projects in each municipality that adopts it. Leaders in Seneca are expecting that the one percent sales tax increase will generate over 30 million dollars.
