CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One man was killed, and eight others were hospitalized following a wrong-way, multi-vehicle crash on Chicago's Southeast Side Saturday.
It happened after a man driving northbound in a sedan on Torrence Avenue crossed the centerline, Chicago police said. His car crashed head-on into an SUV traveling southbound on Torrence Avenue.
Two other vehicles tried to avoid the accident. One crashed into a light pole, and the other crashed into a fixed object on the street.
The man who drove his car over the centerline died at Christ Hospital. The SUV, which was struck head-on, had five people inside — three children, ages 2, 5 and 9. The driver and an adult passenger inside the SUV were hospitalized in serious condition.
Chicago police said the three children were taken to Comer Hospital in good condition.
The driver who crashed his pickup truck into a light pole was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the fourth vehicle, a 58-year-old woman, was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, as well.
Police said no citations have been issued. The Major Accidents Unit is investigating.
