
BARTLETT (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Two South Elgin high school students died this morning following a two-vehicle accident.
Bartlett police said first responders responded at around 7 a.m. to the intersection of Route 25 and Keynon Road to a crash involving a 2002 Honda Civic and semi-tractor trailer.
Four teenage girls occupied the Honda Civic. They were identified as students of South Elgin High School. One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while another passenger died at an area hospital.
The driver of the sedan, a third passenger, and the truck driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were sent to an area hospital.
The Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT) as well as as Bartlett police are still on the scene, determining the cause of the crash.
Route 25 remains closed between Bartlett and Graham Roads.
The School District U-46 Crisis Team has been deployed to South Elgin High School.
"Our thoughts, prayers, and most sincere condolences are with the families and loved ones of the students during this incredibly difficult time," wrote School District U-46 Superintendent Suzanne Johnson wrote in a message to parents and staff.
She is encouraging any district student in need to emotional support to talk with a school social worker or counselor.
"During these moments of sorrow, it's important that we come together to support one another. We will be working closely with local authorities to provide any necessary information and assistance during this time," Johnson added.
