CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The head of the National Democratic Party said the nation will see a stark contrast between Democrats’ convention here in Chicago next year and the GOP convention in Milwaukee.
In formally announcing that the 2024 Democratic National Convention will be here, Party Chairman Jamie Harrison wouldn’t make comparisons with the other cities that competed for the honor.
“At the Republican announcement, they don’t have the diversity that you see right here at the Democratic announcement. We are America, and you will see America on full display when the president and vice president once again accept their nominations and course over to re-election,” Harrison said Wednesday.
And, Harrison said you’ll also see the convention reach out to Chicago’s neighborhoods to make sure they too benefit from having the gathering in this city.
Harrison said he wants the 2024 Democratic National Convention to provide benefits to Chicago’s many communities and not only downtown hotels and restaurants.
Mayor Lightfoot said, like everything else she’s done, equity is at the heart of this effort too. She said there'll be minority contractors and workers from the neighborhoods.
“The commitment that we made is that minority and women-owned businesses were going to be prominently featured, that our workers from Chicago were going to benefit, and we expect that promise to be made manifest.
Harrison said he also wants to see activities for young students who might never otherwise have a chance to see a convention or even leave their neighborhoods.
Local advocates applaud the goal.
