(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A woman who died on Tuesday night in a multi-car crash in Portage has been identified as a teacher at Chesterton Middle School.

Lauren Thompson, 24, was stopped at a light in her GMC SUV when, Portage police said, a Cadillac SUV moving at “an extreme rate of speed” slammed into the rear end.

It happened just before 6 p.m. at Willowcreek and Lute Roads.

Thompson’s SUV was pushed into another car and all three went through the intersection, hitting three other cars.

One flipped over. Another came to rest on top of the Cadillac.

Thompson was dead at the scene.

The 42-year-old man who police said caused the crash was seriously injured.

He was extricated from the Cadillac and was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

A statement from the school district said they’re “devastated” by the Thompson’s death.
