CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Three mothers gathered in Daley Plaza on Sunday in remembrance of their missing family members.
“It’s still hard every day,” said Karen Phillips. “It’s going on five years.”
Phillips was talking about the disappearance of her daughter, Kierra Coles, a Chicago postal worker who was pregnant when she disappeared.
“The police: apparently not doing enough,” she said. “We asked the FBI to step in. We haven’t heard anything from them yet. I’m just here begging for somebody to give me any type of information on my daughter.”
Shantinel Laws, who’s 24-year-old daughter Jerrica Laws has been missing for eight years, and La Shann Walker were among those gathering on a gloomy, somber Mother’s Day. Walker’s 2-year-old grandson, King, vanished along with his 21-year-old aunt, Diamond Bynum.
They have not been seen since July 15, 2015, in Gary.
“Another Mother’s Day where I have to celebrate without what made me another,” Walker said.
Rabbi Michael Ben Yosef said missing people of color do not get the attention from police that they deserve.
“Gabby Petito was missing — God bless their family — the amount of resources, I mean, mountains [were] moved,” he said.
