NEW LENOX, IL (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Human remains discovered more than 40 years ago in New Lenox have been identified.

They've been identified as Brenda Sue Black, last seen Jan. 1, 1980, in Vandalia, Ohio.

The Will County coroner's office said it received confirmation that DNA samples provided by Black's daughter were a match to the remains found in 1981. Her body had been discovered by someone collecting cans near I-80 and Route-30.

In 2015, family members saw a TV show about missing persons and decided to report Brenda as missing. Cold case investigators were able to discover other family members and obtain DNA.

Investigators are now trying to determine the cause of death.
