CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dozens of police officers biked the length of most of the state to honor colleagues who died in the line of duty.
Officers Corey Barnes and Aaron Landers work in Champaign but started the four-day cycle across Illinois in the Metro East. They biked about 340 miles.
The officers clocked those miles biking with about 70 other officers and relatives of fallen colleagues in a charity ride by the state chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, or C.O.P.S.
Terry Roderick, past president of C.O.P.S., told WBBM Newsradio that after a year off due to the pandemic, riders and supporters appreciate seeing each other.
“It’s just when you get a chance to see the families and we’re here to do it The riders want to meet the families, they want to let the families know, ‘Hey, we’re here for you,’” Roderick said.
The ride went through Maywood to honor four members of the Cook County Sheriff’s office who all died of COVID-19 last year and ended at the Gold Star Families Memorial at the lakefront to pay tribute to four members of the Chicago Police Department who also died of the virus.
