(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Birders drove hundreds of miles on Friday to Port Washington, Wis. — north of Milwaukee — to see flamingos on a Lake Michigan beach.

They stayed for about eight hours: five flamingos. The sight drew hundreds of birders. CBS 58 Milwaukee was there.

“Just close your eyes and pretend you’re in the Caribbean,” said one of the birders.

Flamingos have also been seen in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The American Birding Association said they likely got caught up in Hurricane Idalia early this month.

That explanation wouldn’t be unusual for most birds, but it definitely would be for flamingos.
