DANVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city of Danville has been placed on notice by the ACLU that if it passes an ordinance intended to prevent an abortion clinic from opening it will be sued.

The proposal would declare Danville a “sanctuary city for the unborn” and would prohibit the receipt of medications or instruments that can be used by abortion providers.

The ACLU said it would violate the state constitution and state law.

CBS 3 in Champaign reports that during a debate, aldermen discussed the cost of defending a lawsuit.

"You won't know until the finality, which could go beyond potentially to the Supreme Court level," said Alderman Ethan Burt.

“My response to that would be are we willing to donate a million dollars to find out? Is it worth a million dollars to find out?” Alderwoman Tricia Teague asked.

The proposal was passed out of committee and will be considered by the full city council.
