CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A local activist who works to prevent gang violence believes the three soldiers from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, who are charged with supplying guns to Chicago gang members, should be charged with treason.
Tio Hardiman, who runs Violence Interrupters, stood outside police headquarters, said the last thing Chicago needs is members of the military working against efforts to stop shootings.
"We definitely don't need members of the military working against our efforts to reduce gun violence in Chicago," said Tio Hardiman, who leads Violence Interrupters.
"The military must do a better job at screening people out before they join the military, because any time you have members of the military, this is what you call treason, it's really treason right now. The guys that were caught selling guns to Chicago should be brought up on charges of treason against their country and their brothers and sisters in the United States," he said.
Hardiman said if the military could find Bin Laden, it ought to be able to see what soldiers are doing.
"They found Bin Laden, right? They know how to find what they want to find, when it comes to Pentagon-type work, right? So how is it that you cannot find out that some of your soldiers, on- or off-duty, were selling guns in Chicago?" he said.
Hardiman said the Fort Campbell soldiers, one of whom is alleged to have written in a text message that he would never turn his back on the gang, should be charged with treason.
