(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With cash bond ending in Illinois next week, activists are urging Cook County leaders not to replace it with electronic monitoring.

Members of the Coalition to End Money Bond on Thursday gathered in Daley Plaza to voice their concerns about the potential over-use of electronic monitoring once the "Pretrial Fairness Act" is officially implemented next week.

Cook County Commissioner Anthony Quezada said he's heard directly from constituents about the negative impacts of electronic monitoring on their lives and jobs.

“They have huge restrictions on their own movements, so people have to stay within a contained space within their home. They're only given limited hours to move within a designated area,” he said.

Quezada is hoping his colleagues on the Cook County Board will take action to ensure electronic monitoring doesn't become the new norm.

“It is incumbent that we don't put people in a harmful system just because we are used to doing that.”
