(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - For the next couple of months people in several northern suburbs will be hearing more train horns than usual.
The Lake County Quiet Zone usually limits the use of train horns along tracks shared by the Canadian National Railway and Metra's North Central commuter line, which spans from Antioch to Wheeling.
One of the communities in the quiet zone is Buffalo Grove, where Molly Gillespie is the director of communications.
She said until all of the rail crossings in the quiet zone get improvements that were recently mandated by federal regulators, the quiet zone will be suspended.
“They have new requirements for the different crossings of the rail line. Some of that is just simply maintaining or installing signage, but some of it is actually median work, adjusting the curb height or the length of the medians that approach those crossings,” Gillespie said.
She noted all of the needed upgrades should be completed sometime in December, allowing the quiet zone to resume.
