CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It’s become an annual tradition on Chicago’s South Side: honoring the city’s first Black mayor on his birthday.
Minister Robert Plump is President of the Harold Lee Washington Foundation. He spoke outside of the Washington Park Field House on what would have been his godfather’s 102nd birthday.
“We’re going to continue to promote him in a positive, progressive, professional and peaceful way and put the young people to work," he said.
“Everybody can help save God’s children. We can all help stop the violence, the robbing, the stealing, the killing.”
It’s the 28th year the group has organized a Caravan Peace Parade in Washington’s honor, but their efforts don’t stop there.
Brother Zack Matthews is among those pushing for April 15 to be made a citywide holiday for the city’s historic mayor.
“His legacy needs to be embraced, it needs to be promoted, it needs to be lived," he said.
Plump encouraged Chicagoans to call their aldermen and ask them to make Washington's birthday a holiday.
