(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Immigrants and their supporters are calling on legislation that would allow long-term undocumented people to apply for permanent U.S. citizenship.
Activists rallied in Chicago's federal plaza, calling on Congress to pass a bill that would provide lawful permanent resident status to certain long-term undocumented immigrants.
Angel Gonzales, 18 resident of the City's Little Village neighborhood, is from a family of immigrants, and is calling for reform.
Gonzales said he was raised by his mother from an early age in the United States after his father, who does not have legal citizenship, was deported. He was trying to re-enter the U.S. after visiting family in Ecuador.
Pastor Emma Lozano, with the League of United Latin American Citizens, is calling on President Biden to expand the work permits program being used for new immigrants and migrants entering the U.S.
"There is not a program for people that have been here for the last 35-40 years, so we're saying just include the people that are already here paying taxes that have U.S. citizen children and spouses- to allow them to be a part of that," she said.
