CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Alderman Bill Conway is speaking out about a shooting that left two teenage boys dead Friday in the Loop.
He spoke to WBBM near the site in his 34th ward where the two teen students were fatally shot in broad daylight while exiting Innovations High School during the busy lunch hour.
The boys have been identified as Robert Boston, 16, and Monterio Williams, 17, by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Police said the shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. near Washington and Wabash as a group of students were exiting the school. Several suspects in two vehicles got out and fired several shots, hitting Boston and Williams.
Conway said that he’s prepared to give Chicago Police anything they need to solve this crime, but stopped short of sharing any particular investigation details.
"I can tell you the investigation is proceeding," he said. "There are a lot of cameras there. This does appear to be a targeted ambush and cautiously optimistic that police will find the perpetradors."
The downtown alderman also said he has been hearing grave concerns from his constituents, adding that people are understandably scared and upset.
He also commented about social media posts of the fatal incident.
"I don't think it's right that people are posting videos and pictures of the kids as they're dying on the sidewalk," Conway said. "I think that's something that's inappropriate for social media knowing what their families must be going through."
Mayor Brandon Johnson also released a statement regarding the shooting.
"I extend my deepest condolences to their families and the Innovations High School community as they grapple with unimaginable pain and trauma caused by this senseless act of violence," he said.
Police said no one is in custody at this time. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call police at (312) 744-8261.
