(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ald. Maria Hadden said she’s concerned about the reports that migrants may have been sexually abused while housed at a police station, but she says the asylum seekers face a variety of dangers here.
Hadden said there were no reports of alleged sexual activity between police officers and migrants at the 24th District station that serves her community, but the migrants who were there have been moved out, anyway.
That facility has a small lobby, and a streetscape plaza is being built outside, she notes.
Wherever migrants are taken, there will be potential threats, Hadden stressed, because they could become targets for traffickers and scam artists.
Police and her office are vetting and keeping track of all volunteers who are in contact with migrants, she said.
“It’s not a perfect system. But these are vulnerable people – children, men and women,” Hadden said.
They are also trying to keep migrants informed about how to avoid being victimized.
Separate investigations are underway into allegations that migrants were abused at the 10th District station, officials said. The president of the Chicago police union said there is nothing to demonstrate those claims are valid, and he criticized the news media and others for reporting on the allegations before investigators have done their work.
