CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - For the third straight morning, Chicago area residents woke up to arctic-like conditions.

Temperatures sat in the single digits, but with a stiff southwest wind, it felt below zero.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says wind chills this morning could be as low as 15 below zero in some spots.

Temps will struggle to get out of the low 20s, according to AccuWeather.

The good news: A warm-up is coming. AccuWeather says it will not be as harsh this evening, and temperatures will slowly rise.

Tomorrow, we’ll get above freezing, with temps forecasted to be in the mid 30s. Friday, believe it or not, AccuWeather says the area could even reach 40 degrees.

The mild temps will be temporary. AccuWeather says it will turn colder on Saturday, and, by Sunday, another arctic pattern will arrive, with temperatures once again plummeting into the teens and single digits.

In the midst of the bitter cold, the City of Chicago will open their network of warming centers. The City’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) says more than 190 public facilities are open and functioning as places to get warm. These include participating Chicago Public Library locations, Chicago Park District, Chicago Police Department and City Colleges of Chicago facilities.

OEMC adds that there are six official warming centers: Englewood Community Service Center, Garfield Community Service Center, Martin Luther King Community Service Center, North Area Community Service Center, South Chicago Community Service Center and Trina Davilia Community Service Center.
