Arlington International Racecourse is for sale, the company that owns the property announced Tuesday.

Churchill Downs Inc. said it will engage a broker to sell the 326-acre site in Chicago’s northwest suburbs and calls it a “unique redevelopment opportunity.”

“We expect to see robust interest in the site and look forward to working with potential buyers, in collaboration with the Village of Arlington Heights, to transition this storied location to its next phase,” CEO Bill Carstanjen said in a news release.

The racing schedule for 2021 — from April 30 to Sept. 25 — will go on as planned, owners said. Beyond that, Churchill Downs raised the possibility that Arlington Racecourse’s racing license could be transferred to another operation in Illinois that would preserve the horse racing industry here.

“We are committed to the Illinois thoroughbred racing industry and will consider all options in working toward opportunities for it to continue into the future," Carstanjen said.

Churchill Downs owns Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, which also is in the northwest Chicago suburbs. An expansion has been proposed.
