In a galaxy far, far away from Chicago, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is opening.
A decade after he gave up on building it in Chicago because of a lawsuit, filmmaker George Lucas is welcoming the public to his museum in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Celebrities joined Lucas and his wife, native Chicagoan and businesswoman Mellody Hobson, for an opening party on Saturday.
The museum website explains it’s part of a new park and gardens that replaces what used to be an asphalt parking lot.
That description may sound familiar for those who remember Lucas and Hobson announced in 2014 they were going to build it in the south lot of Soldier Field.
A lawsuit from the group Friends of the Parks soon followed, arguing the lakefront should be forever open, clear and free.
Two years later, Lucas announced they were going back to California, saying “No one benefits from continuing their seemingly unending litigation to protect a parking lot.”
Architect Ma Yansong designed both the building intended for the lakefront that resembled a tent and the spaceship-like one in LA.
