An Army veteran is still in critical condition after a hit-and-run crash on the Northwest Side Tuesday - and his family is trying to help investigators find whoever is responsible.
The niece of 55 year-old Tom Kownacki has been going from business to business near Irving Park and Rockwell to see if any security cameras might have recorded the hit-and-run that happened just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Tom Kownacki’s sister-in-law Maura Kownacki says he had been doing some errands and was on his way home, crossing Irving Park in the crosswalk and had a green light when he was hit.
“Three good Samaritans did stop and help him, luckily. But the driver fled the scene in what they believe to be a blue sedan or a black Focus,” Kownacki said.

Maura Kownacki says her brother-in-law has a broken femur and a broken pelvis - and is in a great deal of pain.
“We just want to help to try to find the person who did this. And we’re just praying that Tom will get better and better each day,” Kownacki said.
