CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events' first open house of the year held Thursday featured artists with disabilities.
Kevin Cosgrove said he first got into DJing after making mix CDs in high school.
"You know, compile songs I could find and put them in a certain order and make kind of mix tapes out of them..."
Now he's performing at the Chicago Cultural Center's open house.
He said, as a DJ who's legally blind, performing in a welcoming space means a lot.
"I think bringing in to feel accepted and welcomed and feel like there's this space for all of us to be together and share this experience is really great."
Cosgrove was invited to DJ by Ariella Granados, another DJ and current Artist-in-Residence at the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities.
Granados said they feel grateful to be represented at the open.
"I deserve to be here, and so many other people deserve to be here too. The need for representing people with disabilities, creatives with disabilities, artists with disabilities is so important."
