CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Cook County remains in the “high risk” category for COVID-19, while Chicago is at “medium.” But, the city’s public health commissioner said she expects improvement in the next week or two.
“I don’t see any sign of COVID upending our lives again, lockdowns, any of that,” said Chicago Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady.
Arwady told members of the Chicago City Council Health Committee that she knows “everyone wants COVID to be over.”
“Unfortunately, we continue to see the COVID virus itself mutate quickly, with new, more contagious subvariants emerging every few weeks,” Arwady added.
That said, no new mask requirements are on the horizon.
“We would put new mandates or requirements in if our health system capacity were threatened. I want to make sure folks are hearing that…as we move into the Fall, as we move into the Winter, the big question honestly is what continues to happen with variants,” said Arwady.
Dr. Arwady concluded that she wants “to save mandates for when we really need them.”
