CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of the reform group CHANGE Illinois said the Republican lawsuit to block the Democrats' redistrict could take the partisan remap fight into a new direction.
It’s still basically the same old story of the party in control redrawing legislative districts to preserve their power. But with U.S. Census Data delayed because of COVID, Madeleine Doubek, Director of CHANGE Illinois, said Republican officials are suing because the Democrats used American Community Survey data to guide their map-making.
"It has never been intended to be used for remapping purposes, so that's really the gist of the Republicans complaint. I don't know...we are truly living this last year and a half in unprecedented times, and this is just another example of that," she said.
But, Madeleine Doubek said the rest of the bitter fight covers old ground.
"We saw a very closed, nontransparent, very partisan process, and already we've seen a lawsuit filed by the Republican Party against the Democratic Supermajority, who very quickly adopted maps on a strict party line vote after holding a bunch of hearings that most people in the state didn't know about and couldn't participate in because it was during their work hours," she said.
