(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A popular holiday display in west suburban Aurora will go on as scheduled this year, but under new ownership.
For the last 15 years, the Aurora Rotary Club has been behind the “Festival of Lights” in Phillips Park. But this year, they’re handing over the keys to the city.
“It’s one of the favorite traditions in our community, to light up Phillips Park and have that spectacular drive-thru,” a city official said this week. “I think we’re just going to improve upon it.”
Later in the week, the Aurora City Council will officially accept nearly 400 exhibits from the Rotary Club, including the popular Tunnel of Lights, Leaping Deer Arches and waving Santa Claus.
“I never wanted to see it go away,” Alderwoman Schketa Hart-Burns said. “I’m so glad that we’re making sure that it stays.”
Officials say the Rotary Club worried it wouldn’t find enough volunteers to help assemble the display.
Over the years, they collected over $500,000 in donations from those visiting the free event.
