NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some automotive students at Naperville North High School are gearing up for a land speed race in Texas next month and a local trade school student will be their driver.

A group of female students are working on the Chevy S-10 to get it ready for the race in Beeville, Texas, said autos teacher Greg Ditch.

"It's not like a traditional drag race or NASCAR type race," he explained.

"The cars go in a straight line for one mile. They don't go head to head. You're basically racing yourself and racing in a class to see who gets the top speed in that class."

Behind the wheel will be Alina Aubakirova, a 20 year-old heavy diesel major at Universal Technical Institute in Lisle, who came to the U.S. with her family from Kazakhstan 6 years ago.

"It was my dream since I was a young teenage girl to be able to do the things I do now."

She said it’s very unusual for women to drive cars back in Kazakhstan let alone fix them.
