Baby girl dies after South Side hit-and-run; parents were driving her to hospital

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 6-month-old baby girl died Friday night, and her parents were injured after the driver of another vehicle ran a red light and crashed into their car in Woodlawn, Chicago police said.

Officials said the crash happened shortly before 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of South Cottage Grove Avenue and 63rd Street.

The 6-month-old's parents were taking their baby to Comer Children's Hospital due to breathing difficulties, police said, when the driver of a Chevrolet SUV failed to stop at a red light and crashed into the Ford SUV that was carrying the family.

The Chicago Fire Department took the two adults to University of Chicago Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the 6-month-old was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Officials don't know yet if her death was caused by the crash.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Officer identified the baby as Josette Williams.

After the crash, police said a man and a woman who were inside the Chevrolet SUV fled the scene on foot. Two other vehicles were struck as a result of the crash.

No one is in custody, and police said the Major Accidents unit is investigating.

An autopsy on Josette is scheduled for Saturday.
