(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The renovation of a legendary building on the Chicago skyline uncovered a notorious piece of local sports history.

A baseball from the 1919 World Series between the White Sox and Cincinnati Reds will soon be on display at the Chicago Sports Museum.

The artifact was found by workers renovating the Tribune Tower into condo units, in a cornerstone time capsule.

With it was a letter from May 1920 explaining that the ball was used to strike out six batters in a row — a World Series record.

Four months later, a grand jury would indict eight White Sox players and five gamblers for allegedly conspiring to throw the series. The commissioner of baseball would ban the players for life, and the scheme became known as the “Black Sox” scandal.
