(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new survey finds Chicago has the tenth largest gap in the country between its richest and poorest residents.
Financial services company SmartAsset looked at income data from the largest 98 American cities last year including Chicago.
Jaclyn DeJohn, managing editor of economic analysis for SmartAsset, said Chicago’s income inequality gap is the tenth largest in the country.
"The highest 20% of earners make at least $149,000," she explained. "That's compared to the lowest 20% of earners, who's earning $27,000."
DeJohn said that means the wealthiest Chicagoans earn over five times more.
"That means that there's very different realities in Chicago economically."
Those realities include that inflation actually helped bring Chicago’s cost of living more in line, she added.
SmartAsset found the price of housing, groceries and utilities in Chicago now is still 13% higher than the average U.S. city, but that’s 7% lower than it was before the pandemic.
The three cities with the largest income inequality gaps are New Orleans, Boston and Newark.
